With the Olympic Games coming to his hometown this summer, 32-year-old decathlon world record holder Kevin Mayer has every intention of competing for his third Olympic medal.

Mayer, who has won the World Athletics Championships decathlon three times, has finished in silver medal position twice at the Olympics. Last year, he was forced to drop out of the World Championships in Budapest due to a flared up Achilles' tendon injury.

On Thursday and Friday, Mayer will attempt to gain the Olympic standard of 8,460 points at the 45th Aztec Invitational at San Diego State University.

Mayer achieved his best score in 2018, when he scored 9,126 points to take down the world record held by American Ashton Eaton

Mayer will compete in a mostly collegiate field with his sights on securing the standard.

The main portion of Saturday's invitational will include 18 college teams, some unattached performers and a few pros.

Raevyn Rogers of Nike, Olympic bronze medalist in the women's 800 meters, leads the entries in that event.

Chari Hawkins (ShebeGold) is the top entrant in the women's heptathlon.

Oregon, Arizona State, Colorado, California and BYU are among the biggest programs headed to San Diego in order to begin the outdoor season.

Oregon's Jadyn Mays, third at the NCAA Indoor Championships in both the 60 meters and 200, is entered in the 4x100, the 100 and the 200.

Freshman Rodrick Pleasant of Oregon, a former California state champion, is the top entrant in the men's 100 and will matchup with Cal's David Foster. He, too, will see action on the 4x100 relay and the 200.

Aaliyah McCormick of the Ducks, seventh in the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships, is the top entry in the women's 100-meter hurdles.

Arizona State's Justin Robinson, a member of the Sun Devils' NCAA indoor championship in the 4x400 relay, is in the 4x100 relay and 200 this weekend.
